Diving Koh Samui
Koh Samui Island is the most popular tourist destination on the east coast of Thailand and has been attracting
visitors since the early 1970's. The Gulf of Thailand has some quality dive sites. Most of the dives sites are
close to Koh Tao and can be dived on full day trips out of Koh Samui.
The highlights are whale sharks which are frequent visitors in this area. You will find as well towering pinnacles,
huge rock formations covered in colourful soft and hard corals and sloping reefs.
For most divers the diving on Thailand's west coast is better, but that doesn't mean you cannot have a great
time underwater around Koh Samui. Koh Samui is one of Thailand's favourite tourist destinations and will
continue to be, as you find here excellent hotels, resorts, beautiful beaches, nightlife and quiet retreats here.
Samui is a great place for a dive holiday, especially during the summer months when Thailand's west coast
diving destinations such as Phuket and the Similan Islands are in their rainy season. But as Phuket is easily

Diving Sites in Koh Samui
Chumpon Pinnacle
Chumpon Pinnacle is situated North West of Koh Tao, this group of rocks is completely submerged and
represents undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Gulf of Thailand dive sites : Don't miss it. This giant
has a maximum depth of 35 metres with the pinnacle 14 metres from the surface. The top is covered with
pink anemone. Sharks at Chumpon are common, with black tip and white tip reef sharks and bull sharks
resident. This site is one of the most popular for the opportunity to see one of the famous whale sharks. Tuna,
barracudas, groupers and shoals of batfish will delight you.
Samran Pinnacles
Samran Pinnacles is one of the more advanced sites in the area as currents can be strong here and the
shallowest point of the dive is in around 12m and the bottom in 30m. The three submerged pinnacles are
covered in anemones and soft corals and the site is close to Sail Rock which is between Koh Tao and Koh
Pha-ngan. The strong current often brings larger pelagic fish such as jacks, trevally and barracudas. Visibility
normally ranges between 5 to 20 metres.
South West Pinnacles
The South West Pinnacles are situated to the South West of Koh Tao. This impressive rocky formation
starts at 28 meters and goes up to 10 metres from the surface. A very large variety of soft coral, sponges,
and anemone which colonize nearly all the rock surface are all to be seen here. You will also find a large
diversity of fish such as angel fish, barracuda and often you will see leopard sharks around the canyon.
Sail Rock
The famouse Sail Rock is situated between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. This very spectacular rocky formation offers diving
to a depth of 40 meters. This site is famous because it's very popular for the whale sharks often cruise through
here and a many people come with the secret hope of swimming with these amazing creatures. Another
interesting feature of this site is its chimney, which you can enter at 18 metres and exit at 12 or 5 metres from
the surface.
National Marine Park of Ang Thong
Ang Thong National Marine Park is famous for its role in the Hollywood movie "The Beach". This wonderful
group of islands are proud to be called one of the prettiest landscapes of Thailand. The sites are renowned
for their huge diversity of soft corals and for their caves. You'll be surprised by the diversity of the underwater
world here. These sites are also great for snorkelling.
Koh Wao
The Island Koh Wao is perfect for beginners. This site has a fabulous selection of soft and hard corals and some very
impressive table corals. You'll also see a big range of reef fish. It's also another perfect site for snorkelling.
Koh Losin
The Island Koh Losin has a wide diversity of coral and marine life and divers that have made it to this remote spot are
rewarded with shark and manta sightings. Large coral bommies, plateaus and drop offs with probably the best
visibility you will find in the Gulf can be found here as the reef edge meets the deeper waters of the South
China Sea.
Koh Kra
The Island Koh Kra is a small remote island situated around 80 nautical miles off the southeast coast of Samui. It is
rarely dived due to its remote location. The island is named after the loggerhead turtle and it's one of the few
remaining places in the Gulf of Thailand where they can be seen. Black tip reef sharks are also common here
and manta rays have been noted in the area. The island is usually only visited by live-a-boards that will also go
to Koh Losin.
Twin Peaks
The Twin Peaks, also called the Twins, is located on the far side of Koh Nang Yuan and starts at around 5
metres below the surface and drops to a depth of 18 metres. This is an ideal site for beginners due to its
depth and ease of navigation. The rocks are embedded into white sand and you'll find plenty of marine life.
Torpedo
The Torpedo is a 70 metre Japanese cargo vessel that sank in the mid 1970's. It's sitting upright in around 55
metres of water an hour north of Koh Tao. Due to the depths involved this has been classified a technical dive
for experienced divers only. There are three areas of penetration; however visibility is usually poor at depth.
The deck is at 45 metres and the cargo holds are still full of teak logs, with a few scattered on the seabed.
