Suvarnabhumi Airport -BKK- (pronuonced Su wanna phum), also known as Bangkok International Airport, is the relatively a new airport built in Bangkok Thailand; it succeeded the older Don Meuang Airport.

Suvarnabhumi officially took over from Don Meuang airport back in September 2006 and currently serves as the main hub for Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and Orient Thai airways, and also serves as the regional and connection point for many international and commercial airline companies in and out of the country.

Suvarnabhumi Airport - The Three Headed Dragon
The Three Headed Dragon

The name Suvarnabhumi was chosen by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, and means ‘Golden Land’ in Thai and refers to the Golden Kingdom which is believed to been situated somewhere between Burma Laos and Thailand in south east Asia.

Bangkok International Airport has three terminals: there are two International Terminals 1 and 2 and there is also a Domestic Terminal. The International Terminals are right next to each other, while the Domestic Terminal is only a short air-conditioned walkway-shuffle away. There is a small shuttle buses for those that need them.

Suvarnabhumi Airport – Terminal 1

Suvarnabhumi Airport Terminal 1 has 124 check-in counters. It handles flights for more than 30 airlines. There are over literally hundreds of international, domestic and dedicated freighter airlines that operate out of Suvarnabhumi International Airport, such as Aeroflot, Air-India, EgyptAir, El Al, Korean Air, Malaysia Airlines, SAS and Thai Airways.

Suvarnabhumi Terminal 2

Terminal 2 has fewer counters with 96 in total. It handles flights for more than 30 airlines including British Airways, China Airlines, KLM Royal, Dutch Airlines, Kuwait Airways, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Etihad.

Suvarnabhumi Domestic Terminal

The Domestic Terminal has 43 check-in counters. It handles domestic flights for Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways and several others; however most domestic flights can be caught at Bangkok’s other airport Don Meuang.

There is an absolute bounty of fare available at Bangkok International Airport; offering travellers a huge variety of dining choices, ranging from western style fast food to traditional Japanese, Chinese and of course Thai food dishes.

The main outlets of food and drink are on the 4th floor of Terminal 2. There you will find an assortment of American fast-food eateries. Situated on the same floor is the Brewhouse Restaurant, which serves wonderful English breakfasts 24 hours a day, there is also a Chinese restaurant and a cafe, all have free internet.

There is a Thai Restaurant on the 4th floor of Terminal 1 too and you can find another Thai restaurant in the Domestic Terminal. Thai food is also available at the airport’s food court in the parking building of T 2, which is highly recommended for those with a love for Thai food.

Newspaper, books and similar items are readily available form many outlets throughout the Suvarnabhumi Airport.
A range of shops is located in the 3rd floor departures hall. Where you can purchase Souvenirs, books and electrical goods -these are all available from the King Power Tax Free shop.

Currency Exchange and ATMs

There are several banks at the airport including: The Thai Military Bank ground floor, Bangkok Bank is on the 2nd floor of T2 and the Krung Thai Bank is situated on the 2nd floor of T1.

There are many ATMs and currency exchange counters throughout the airport there are also currency exchange offices.

Transport

The BTS (skytrain) runs straight into the airport from the city. There is an almost unlimited amount off Taxis waiting to whisk you away into the city and surrounding areas. There are City Buses and Mini-Buses available throughout the entire day and all at very reasonable prices. And of course there is a multitude of Car Rental Outlets too and Limousine hire is also available.
